Tretin 0.025% Cream Composition

Tretinoin, a very effective retinoic acid, is the drug contained in tretin cream. This drug is a part of topical therapy for acne. It is a retinoic acid also called all-trans Vitamin A acid or all-trans retinoic acid. It is a part of first-generation retinoids.

Uses of Tretin 0.025 % Cream

Tretinoin has been shown to prevent photo-aging of the skin.

How Does Tretin 0.025% Cream Work?

Tretinoin promotes the breakdown of keratinocytes and prevents horny cells from binding to each other. Therefore, horny impactions in follicles, called comedones, are unable to form. Epidermal cell turnover is stimulated which results in peeling.

No antibacterial action of tretinoin is present. Retinoic acid is highly effective in comedonal acne. It is one of the first-line drugs to treat acne. Its response is delayed. It may take 6 to 10 weeks to show a response with respect to acne.

How to Use Tretin 0.025% Cream?

Wash your hands before applying tretin cream. Firstly, clean the skin surface where the cream has to be applied. Dry it properly and gently. Use your fingertips and carefully apply a small amount of medication.

For the application of liquid preparations, you can use a gauze pad or a cotton swab. Ask your doctor or any other information regarding the application of the medicine. Use this medication on the skin surface only. Rinse immediately if you mistakenly apply it in the inner lip area or inside the nose or the mouth. Do not apply to damaged skin.

Make sure that you do not get the cream in your eyes. If the cream gets into your eyes, rinse immediately with large amounts of water. Inform your doctor immediately if eye irritation develops.


Tretinoin should be applied in a very small quantity, around the size of a fingernail, in a very thin layer on the skin on the affected area. It should be applied once every day or as many times as directed by your consulting medical health personnel. Do not alter the dosage on your own accord and strictly follow the routine recommended by your doctor.

This treatment is available in different strengths and in different forms like gel solutions and creams. What If a Dose is Skipped?

In case you miss a dosage apply the tretinoin cream as soon as you remember it. If the time for the second dose of the cream is near, miss the doors and start following the original routine. Do not overuse or overdose the cream to make a further dose that has been missed overdosing the cream may lead to symptoms associated with overdosing.

This may be harmful. Inform your doctor if symptoms like burning and itching develop. Overusing will not make the skin heal faster. Also, take care that you use it in the same amount every day.

Side Effects


Tretinoin in gel or cream can be alternated with Benzoyl peroxide. This means that one can be used in the morning and the other should be used at night. Do not apply both of them together because benzoyl peroxide accelerates the degradation of tretinoin.

The teratogenic risk with topical retinoic acid is very minor because it produces very low blood levels. Even then it should be used with great caution during pregnancy only when absolutely essential.


Tretinoin has the potential to irritate the skin, therefore, starts with a lower concentration. Apply it only once and apply it daily.

Other side effects include a feeling of warmth, stinging.

Excessive redness, edema, and symptoms of crusting may also be present.

It may cause darkening of the skin with time.

Lightening of normal skin color can also be observed.

In some cases, lightening of treated areas of dark skin occurs.

It can also cause increased sensitivity of the skin to light. Therefore, use it preferably at night and do not go out in the sun after you have applied this cream.

The risk and benefit ratio of long-term prophylactic therapy of tretinoin is not clear.

It may lead to dryness of the skin and mouth. To prevent it, use moisturizer and drink plenty of water.

Your acne might appear to worsen during the first few weeks when you start using tretinoin due to the mechanism of action of the cream.

Drug Interactions of Tretin 0.025% Cream

Benzoyl peroxide accelerates the degradation of tretinoin contained in Tretin cream.

Tretinoin interacts severely with a few drugs which outweigh the benefits. The risks are too severe.

Some drugs interact moderately with which tretinoin can be taken in some special circumstances.
